1974: The Turning Point from Westbound to Mercury Records
Ohio Players rank among 1970s funk's most innovative bands—exceptional musicians throughout; and 1974 seems to be their key year across the decade. They release two albums, Skin Tight and Fire, plus one compilation, Climax, while they switch to Mercury Records record company.
The Climax Compilation and the Westbound Visual Legacy
The album Climax is a Westbound compilation released in October 74 (way later than the Mercury sign off), featuring previously released songs like 'Sleep Talk' and 'Food Stamps Y'all.' Nothing of much excitement here for me, except for the fact that Climax is in consistency with the other Westbound albums (Pain, Pleasure and Ecstacy) in terms of “album cover theme” – featuring provocative photography that frequently explores themes of sex and somewhat of sado-masochistic relationships; with Pat "Running Bear" Evans contributing to the overall vibe.
The album cover concept shifts from “kinky” to “adventurous,” as Robin McBride (from Mercury Records) so eloquently describes in the Unsung documentary 😄 The “nude and sexy” theme is still present, but now Jim Ladwig is part of the art direction team. ⭐
Jim Ladwig's Platinum Covers
Jim Ladwig works with the Ohio Players on the platinum trilogy (both of the 74 albums, Skin Tight and Fire and also the 75 album Honey) under the umbrella of AGI – but before co-founding AGI, Jim Ladwig is the Art Director for Mercury Records, designing album covers for artists like Quincy Jones, Cannonball Adderley and Sarah Vaughan – as such, he then probably knows better than anyone how to keep the theme consistent with Westbound but change the direction for under Mercury.
Ladwig designs album covers that support and complement the music. His creations go beyond simple decoration and are integral parts of the artistic statement. He is nominated for the Grammy in album packaging six times, winning in 75 with Honey. That year, six of the nine albums nominated in the category is published by AGI. Later AGI becomes one of the biggest publishers of album covers in the world, printing over 200 million jackets a year at their peak.
From Skin Tight to Fire: Sound Development
Coming back to Ohio Players and the year 74 🎶 - of the two very important albums released by the Ohio Players in 74, I would say Skin Tight sort of offers a preview of their future sound, with notable songs like 'Jive Turkey' paving the way for 'Love Rollercoaster.'
And my favorite album among the three out of 74 in Ohio Players' discography is the sonic inferno Fire. This key album reinforces their reputation in funk development. 👑 Every song on this album has a really wonderful tone - catchy, upbeat, funky. With so many amazing songs to choose from, my all-time favorite is 'What the Hell?' – with its stunning jazzy rock vibe 🎇
